Hindu spiritual chief Kalicharan Maharaj, arrested over alleged derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi, was on Friday sent to judicial custody by a court in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district.
The police produced him in court a day before the expiry of his police remand, asserting they had questioned him and did not need his extra custody.
After his arrest in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh on early Thursday morning by Raipur police, the Raipur court had sent him to police custody for 2 days.
“He was scheduled to be produced but again on Saturday. Nonetheless police done the questioning and offered him before Judicial Magistrate First Class Chetna Thakur on Friday and requested that he be sent to judicial custody,” acknowledged District Prosecution Officer Hina Yasmin Khan.
The court sent him on judicial remand till January 13, she urged PTI.
After his alleged remarks about the Mahatma went viral and drew frequent condemnation, Raipur police on Thursday apprehended Kalicharan Maharaj alias Abhijeet Dhananjay Saraag from near Bageshwar Dham, about 25 km from Khajuraho town in Madhya Pradesh.
Earlier than that, on Sunday, an FIR was registered towards him at Tikrapara police space here under IPC sections 505 (2) (statements growing or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and 294 (low acts). Later, the police added piece 124 A (sedition) too.
His arrest had resulted in a row between the BJP authorities in Madhya Pradesh and the Congress authorities in Chhattisgarh. The MP authorities claimed that its police weren’t instructed about the action.
On Sunday evening, on the prime of a two-day ‘dharma sansad’ (spiritual parliament) held in Raipur, Kalicharan Maharaj had allegedly feeble abusive words towards Mahatma Gandhi.
